Raindrop.io is a visually appealing Xmarks alternative

Raindrop.io is an online bookmarking service for all platforms and browsers. It’s not text based, which is a great relief! We really like their Moodboard option to view bookmarks. Also, with Raindrop you can save your bookmarks into folders. You can access these bookmarks from any location.

First of all, we should mention suggested tags. This is one of the coolest features we discovered in Raindrop. You have to be a PRO member to access them. Now, whenever you bookmark a link, the system suggests relevant tags. This way, it’s a lot easier to save and rediscover your bookmarks later on. We haven’t found this feature with many other Xmarks alternatives!

Secondly, Raindrop.io is indefinitely free to use. You just lose some of the coolest features like a duplicate finder or the option to make new nested collections. So, if you want to continue working full throttle, you’ll have to invest about $3 a month for a Pro account. Other Pro features include tag suggestion and broken link finder.

What’s not to like? Well, first of all, once you start your free account, you don’t have access, not even temporarily, to the PRO features. You’ll have to hope they will turn out just as useful as you think they are.

Also, if you want to get started, you’re not helped along with a predetermined set of popular bookmarks, like you see at start.me, for example. There’s simply nothing there to get you started. Consequently, you start building your collection from scratch. This is possible, but not much fun, as you essentially throw away your old data. In contrast, you might begin with importing your precious data. That requires trust. And knowledge about the way you make a backup, in HTM-format, so you can import it. This is also quite cumbersome.

Add to this the slow initial loading, and you might just lose interest. That would be a shame, though, since we think Raindrop.io is worth a good look!

  1. raindrop.io: Another propietary bookmark syncing tools that neither syncs nor allows the most basic of bookmark organizing structure, that is, subfolders. Everything is laid flat unless you shell the premium ($$$) to restore hierarchical structure. Unless you have 20 or less bookmarks, all laid out like Windows 8 tiles menu, this is an utter mess to be useable.
