Unfortunately, the immensely popular bookmark sync service Xmarks will shut down on May 1st. Or as LogMeIn, the parent company of LastPass, puts it: she retired. LastPass acquired Xmarks Sync in 2010 and was subsequently acquired by LogMeIn in 2015. Ever since LastPass bought Xmarks, things started going downhill. We didn’t see any new features. They abandoned Xmarks. What a shame! And now they’re gone forever. That’s why it’s time to look into the many alternatives for Xmarks, including our favorite: start.me.
Many Xmarks alternatives
If you are looking to replace Xmarks with an alternative, then you have come to the right place. I have compiled a list of apps, sites, and services that you can use to replace Xmarks. These services are all excellent replacements. However, most of them are cloud-based bookmark managers rather than bookmark synchronizers. They’re an indication of the fact that time moves on.
Now that most browsers promote their built-in bookmark synchronizer, there’s no need for a separate solution. In this regard, we can understand the decision to retire Xmarks.
Still, if you’re looking to share your bookmarks between devices and different browsers, you will need something more than your browser will offer. Cloud-based bookmark managers remain the best solution. They offer more functionality, visual appeal, and work in many different browsers or devices. Usually, there’s an independent company or developer behind them, so you can really make a choice here.
Moving to a different service
If you want to start using a different service, then there is a lot of choices. What will be very import for you is to make sure your bookmarks collections from Xmarks will be available in your new tool as well. Usually, this can be done relatively quickly by importing the HTML file you exported before. Some solutions are app-specific. Whenever possible, I will try and add this information to my reviews of the Xmarks alternatives below.
